The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways-2013

Beitrag von Mark Branson »

Hello,

Apologies for English once more.

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways in North Wales have had a very busy year celebrating 150 years of operation on the Ffestiniog Railway.

The Ffestiniog Railway was a narrow gauge line that carried slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port at Porthmadog. It is now one of the best preserved lines in the UK.

The Welsh Highland Railway was closed in the 1930's and was resurrected in the past few years. The line runs through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park and has a dramatic climb up the mountains from Porthmadog before reaching the North Wales coast 25 miles later at Caernarfon. Due to the nature of the line three South African Railway Beyer-Garrett locos were imported for running services on the line.

It is a truly magnificent railway and is well worth a visit if you're visiting North Wales.

Here's a link to an official video taster:

There's even a third "point of railway interest", the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Portmadoc, which hosts some interesting steam locos (e.g. "Russell" and "Gelert") and rolling stock.
